Like some of you, I’ve tried many, many, MANY makeup storage solutions and none of them lasted more than a few months. It would seem like a good idea at first, but when used on a day-to-day basis, it wasn’t practical.
One storage solution (the common wooden Ikea box) lasted me the longest. It held all of my makeup and had enough drawers to keep everything organized. The big problem was that I couldn’t see everything. If I don’t see it, I won’t use it.
Then I saw this coffee pod drawer in the weekly Bed Bath & Beyond advertisement and thought it would be perfect. Sadly, it only lasted a week or two. The makeup jars rolled from side to side and made a ridiculous amount of noise every time I opened the drawer.
I was getting close to the perfect solution….I could feel it!
I decided not only did I need a makeup drawer, I wanted a small vanity. That way, I have a place to sit, relax, do my makeup, and Mel wouldn’t have to deal with me taking up counter space in the bathroom. We made a trip to Ikea and I think I’ve made the perfect vanity to fit my needs! Every time I walk into the room, I love the vanity more and more. I think this will last a long time. =)
The glass top allows me to see EVERYTHING. Love, love, love.
Our bedroom is a little small so this compact vanity is just right. NOTE: The Ikea instructions say to either have a support in the middle of the shelf or have the legs/brackets closer together. Therefore, please follow the instructions carefully if you plan to have a lot of weight on your shelf. I do not have a lot of weight on there and I don’t lean on the shelf so I’m taking the risk. =)
Acrylic containers (more info below) easily slide in and out.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT use the screws that come with the legs because they are too long. Instead, use shorter screws from your local home improvement store.
Products Used:
- SHELF AND LEGS: Four Vika Curry legs attached to an Ekby Gruvan shelf (46 7/8″ x 11″). IMPORTANT: Do not use the screws that come with the legs because they are too long. Instead, use shorter screws from your local home improvement store.
Update: The shelf now only comes in black. Also, the Vika Curry legs have been discontinued, but the Vika Adils legs are similiar. - MIRROR: Kolja round mirror
- STOOL: The Gilbert stool is small and doesn’t take up too much space. Future project is a cushion to make the seat more comfortable.
Update: This particular stool has also been discontinued, but another cheap alternative is the Marius stool. - CLEAR TRAYS: Darice Jewelry Designer Bead Storage System with 24 Containers. I found the acrylic trays in the craft section at Walmart, but you can also find them in the jewelry/bead section at Michaels, www.createforless.com, or Joann Fabric and Craft stores. Three containers fit on each side of the shelf. Each bead storage container comes with 24 empty round jars. After buying 6 containers, I ended up with a ton of jars. I saved some to use when I travel (i.e. lotion, travel makeup, pills) and gave the rest away to friends.
- CLEAR ORGANIZER: The Godmorgon box with compartments goes perfectly on top to hold more makeup products and tools.
NOTES:
- The shelf is only 11 inches deep. Therefore, it may be too small for some of you. If you need a larger vanity, the Vika Gruvan table top is much larger.
- Since the shelf is not very deep, I don’t have a need for a magnifying mirror because I lean forward and I’m close enough to the wall mirror. Also, it would take up more room and I like having an empty surface.
- If you don’t mind putting holes in the wall, the shelf can be used with different kinds of brackets as well.
I saw this on my friend’s kat’s tumblr and I’m in love! I want to make one when I move into a new apartment. I also started browsing the rest of your blog and everything is so cute! Just wanted to say keep up the good work!
Thanks, Tien. I hope you get a new apartment soon so you can make the vanity!! As you can see from the picture, my bed is right behind it so it doesn’t take up much room at all.
love clear, clean, transparency!!
looks so chic… better than mac
OMG! I love your vanity! It is so much more creative and by far the best I’ve seen all day, I had been searching on youtube ideas because I’m planning on making me a new vanity. I absolutely love how you can see everything. Thanks for posting!
I love this idea so much that I put in an order for the pieces! Just one question though, are there spots on the under side of the table to screw in the legs or did you have to make your own screw holes? Can’t wait to set mine up.
Thanks! It’s been months and I’m still loving my vanity. The shelf does not have pre-drilled holes so I drilled small holes, then attached the legs. If you plan to put a lot of weight in the middle, I would suggest putting the legs a little closer to the center. When I was done, my shelf leaned forward a bit and was a little shaky. If you have the same problem, just turn the shelf around–that way it tilts/leans against the wall. Now it’s sturdy. =)
This shelf is no longer available. Could you recommend a similar one? Thanks!
Hi. No, unfortunately I haven’t seen another shelf that’s similar. =(
This is so cute! Once I move I will definitely be making one of these but will probably try to use boxes for the legs so i can have storage for my hair products as well. Thanks for posting this wonderful idea!
making one soon!!!
I have been looking for a makeup stoarage solution. I recently assembled the Ikea table but decided it was too wide. This will be perfect and its alot cuter with the glass. Great idea on the usage of arcrylic storage containers too. I am soo excited to do this.
So I just made mine, but I made it black!!! Totally love it!!! Thanks for the idea! 🙂
Jenn, I’m so glad you love your new vanity! Have fun organizing all your makeup. 🙂
Thank you sooooo much!!! I had been looking for something like this for a century;). You are a real genius!! I could get all of the items due to your list. Thank you so much for sharing. Ali-ce from Munich, Germany
Brilliant idea. You are such a smart cookie!
I would love to have some of my most frequently used make up in easy reach like this so I think I will take a little look at it when I am next at IKEA.
wow! this is so cool! I want to try it!
outfittingbyaubs.blogspot.com
This is a fantastic idea! Totally stealing it and adding it to my dream house on Pinterest, ha!
So I loved this Idea and I bought all of the materials to make it! The only thing that was horrible was the screws that came with the legs were too long for the thickness of the shelf and popped through the other side. 😦 I wish I had known this before and I would have gone to Home Depot and bought shorter screws to make it look cleaner and not show through. All in all great idea. It is kind of wobbly, but up against the wall it seems to be fine.
Oh no!! I completely forgot that part. Yes, the screws were too long so we did end up using shorter screws. I’m so sorry I forgot to include such an important part, but will definitely update the post.
As soon as I saw this I knew I needed to make it for my closet that I’ve been wanting to turn into a vanity nook. I dragged my boyfriend to Ikea after he got home from work today to get the parts. It worked out great! As far as the screws go, my boyfriend said he used the 3/4″ size. Thanks for sharing this great idea!
What section is that wooden box under on Ikea’s website? Something like that would be perfect for my makeup.
Hi Patrice. Unfortunately, Ikea has discontinued the wooden box, which is sad because it was so popular. When I purchased the box years ago, and I think it was either in the kitchen or bathroom section. Hopefully they’ll bring it back soon!
Thank you for responding. Ikea seems to do that a lot, & I’m not sure why you would dscountinue something that is popular. They used to have a vanity that you hung on the wall, it was about $500 but the don’t carry it anymore. But you gave me a more cost effective way to create a vanity. Thanks!
Thank you so much for being so creative! I pinned this idea a while back on Pinterest and I just got around to making it yesterday! Mine is in black though. I’m just glad to have creative minds in the world such as yourself :o)
I just wanted to thank you again for this awesome diy and share my almost finished look with you. I just realized that I unknowingly used the same mirror you did. ;p http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee518/missaxann/Closet8.jpg
Melissa, it looks great! I LOVE how your vanity fits perfectly in your closet/nook…as if it was made specifically for that. =) Enjoy your new vanity!
I can’t find the desk at ikea did they discontinue it? You did an amazing job but where can I find a desk like that??
Hi Stacey! Yes, unfortunately Ikea has discontinued the shelf. 😦
Im looking online and I can’t find those legs..are they still called Vika curry? How did you find them?
Hi Chenelle,
Yes, the ones I have are called the Vika Curry. However, Ikea is always replacing old items for new ones so they don’t have that exact one anymore. They have similar ones (Vika Adils). You can search “table legs” for all of their options.
I super excited about this project I live 2 house from an Ikea store I will be goign down there next sunday to purchase the supplies. But im wondering… I have carpet in my room and Im deciding on weather i should do the brakets or the legs. What would you recomend? are the les wobbly? should I do the brakets if I fear that?
Hi! As long as the vanity will be leaning against a wall, it will be fine. I think brackets would work perfectly if you want the floating shelf look. I like the legs because it looks like a table. Over the years I’ve put more makeup in the shelf and on top so definitely put the legs more towards the center as shown in the directions as opposed to all the way out to the edges like I did. The Ikea website says that the max weight is 44 pounds. It is a sturdy shelf so I don’t ever fear that it will break, but I still wouldn’t overload it with too many products, containers, etc.
I’ve gotten a lot of emails/comments of others doing the same thing and no one has complained about it being wobbly so if you like the look of the legs, I would recommend you sticking with that. =) Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Melissa,
I’ve been trying so hard to find a decently priced but cute white stool for my vanity! Where did you get yours? It’s so cute!
So where in Ikea is this shelf? Is this a shelf that you added legs to and where did you find the legs? I would love to do this as well.
Hello. Yes, the glass shelf and legs are completely separate. The shelf was located in the living room/wall shelves department. I had to look at the product number on the display model and then locate it in the warehouse. For the legs, they were located in the office furniture/desks department. Again, I looked up the product number and grabbed them from the warehouse. Numerous people have told me that some Ikea stores no longer carry the shelf. If they don’t have it at your store, ask the workers in the warehouse because sometimes they have a couple in the back. Good luck!!
This is such a great idea! I also have small space available in my apt. and if I had vanity, it would be so much easier to share our one bathroom so we could both get ready in the morning!
Great idea! You guys should make more of these and sell them online! I know I would buy one!
Made mine today!!!! Best idea ever!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!!
Hey! Such a great idea! I’m going to try it as well! I’m kind of having trouble though finding the acrylic storage containers online…know where I should I look!? Thanks!!
http://www.joann.com/jewelry-designer-bead-storage-system/prd54008/
Joann Fabric & Craft has them. Those are the ones that I bought. I got them in the store for $10 each but they are on sale online for $6
Hi Megan! You may want to try Joann’s Fabric like Melissa mentioned because it’s on sale. The Container Store also has some acrylic trays with dividers that will also fit in the shelf. Hope you enjoy your vanity! 🙂
i discovered your vanity on pinterest. I love it because its so simple, functional and neat. ive been trying to find a solution for my makeup area as well and this looks perf. im so glad you put up where you got everything and how you put it together. def. gotta pay a visit to ikea. thank you for the lovely post!
http://soudavones.blogspot.com/
I love this but just before I head out to IKEA is the shelf still available? And can I get the legs there as well?
Yes, my friend just went to her local Ikea a few days ago and they still carry both the shelf and legs. My friend said the white one was on sale, but not the black one. Good luck and enjoy! 🙂
I love the way you improvised your vanity.what you said is true.what we don’t see,we don’t use.job well done.i shall look out for the Ekby Gruvan Shelf at my local Ikea store.thanks for sharing.
This is so great! I have been trying to do something similar in my small space and this is perfect and low budget. Well done and thanks for the how-to!
Hey just wanted to say i went to ikea today took some finding as i didnt realizethe top was a shelf they are out in black and white. Im going back tmrw and six white are coming in i am so excited but to all your pinterest friends ikea said they are discontinuing this! Oh no cuz its so great. So everyone go get it
Oh no! I want to go get another one just in case mine every breaks! =)
omg! this would be perfect for me!! my room doesnt have much space at all. the only problem is i do not have an ikea any wera in my area or close to my area! any suggestions?
Hi Alex,
I heard Ikea has decided to discontinue the shelf so others may have the same problem. =( I’ve been trying to think of an alternative and all I can think of so far is having both a wooden and glass floating shelf separately. Stores such as The Container Store, Target, Walmart have floating shelves made of wood. Then install a floating glass shelf 2 inches above the wood shelf. The only problem with this will be finding both a wooden and glass shelf that are similar in size. If I find any alternatives, I’ll definitely let you know!
Thanks for posting all this! Love the idea. I’m gonna try it
I absolutely Love this idea, and plan to re-create it for my walk in closet! Super cute!!!! I love this Vanity idea sooo much I had to Re:BLOG about it!!!!!Thanks so much for sharing!!
Thanks, Roxanne! You’re going to LOVE it! Go to your nearest Ikea soon before they discontinue the shelf!
hey i did it! I made one for myself and I love it. Makes getting ready just that much more pleasant. I wrote a blog about it please check it out.
SoudavoneS Organize the way you Make up
Your vanity looks great!! Loving the black color…so sleek! =) Just one word of caution. The shelf directions says to have another support in the middle of the shelf, so you might want to consider that if you plan to put a lot of weight on it. I hope you enjoy it everyday as much as I do!
I LOVE this idea, however the nearest IKEA store to me is 4 hours away 😦 ! I tried going on the website to see if IKEA would possibly have it available online, but the site states that it isnt available for online purchase. What would be a good alternative??
Hi Rochelle.
Hi I was wondering did u get the piece of glass seperately or did it come with the shelf? Also do u know how much bigger the vena gruvin table top is? Thank u for posting this I absolutely love it 🙂 and it’s perfect for my room
Thanks Sara! =) The glass came with the shelf so I didn’t have to purchase them separately. The Vika Gruvan table top is 55 1/8″ (l) x 27.5″ (w).
Hi just wondering the estaminet price it was for the stool, legs, shelf, glass top, and the containers inside. Also where did you get the glass too and how does it slide in? Amaaazing Job.
Hi Chenelle,
Here is an approximate breakdown of the prices…it’s been awhile so I might be a little off:
Shelf (glass was included): $59
Legs: $5 each
Stool: $10
Containers: $3-4 each
The glass is part of the shelf so it came all together. The containers just sit and slide on the shelf…they’re not attached in any way. I just pull them in and out. =)
This is beautiful!!!! Such a good idea really glad I found this..thank you! I have a question about the kolja mirror do you have the smaller or bigger one? I saw at ikea they had two sizes
Thanks, Marie! I have the 22 inch mirror. =)
I looked on ikea and the shelf is still there. I checked it’s availability in my area…and it came up high. So I am going tomorrow to look for it and get it. I may hook it to the wall with brackets and not use the legs at all. I’ll let you know!
This is AWESOME! Thanks for coming up with such a GREAT idea for the rest of us! So pretty and so tidy 🙂
This is a great idea… I live in the Caribbean so I’m going to try to get these items online.. I don’t have much space in my room and this would be awesome for me… I’m not getting the links in your description is it possible for you to post updated links.. Greatly appreciate.. Thanks!!
Hi Nickysha! Unfortunately, Ikea changes and discontinues their products quite often. It looks like the white shelf and Vika Curry legs are no longer available. However, the black version of the shelf is so I’ve updated the blog post with the link. I also included updated links for other leg and stool options. I hope that helps!!
This is the best idea I’ve seen! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂
this is pretty impressive! i love it!
Hey! I’m LOVING this idea and currently searching IKEA for it now…. did you buy four individual legs or the tabe top legs? Also, were the legs and the shelf the exact same size?? What are your leg measurements? I’m not the biggest handyman-girl around, so I’m a little nervous, ha!
Hi Taylor! Sorry for the late response! I bought the floating shelf and 4 individual legs. I think they have discontinued the exact legs I have, but they still have other ones available. I believe the legs were 28 inches high and I screwed them to the shelf (don’t use the screws that come with the legs, but shorter ones). GOOD LUCK!!
This is so awesome and creative. I’m definitely doing this. I was wondering if you could tell me how many inches is the gap in between the shelf and glass. I’m hoping it’s not too short.
Thank you! And I love the rest of your blog as well. 🙂
Hi Mich. =) The gap is 2 inches so if you were to get a 2-inch tray, it would not fit and would barely slip in. Therefore, you’ll want to find shorter trays.
I love this vanity! and the rest of your blog as well. Definitely doing this.
I was wondering if you could tell me the gap between the shelf and the glass. I’m hoping it will not be too short.
Thank you!!
Sorry for reporting the same comment/question for some reason when I came back to your blog it didn’t update the first time.
Thanks for letting me know the gap measurement! Appreciate it. Can’t wait to get this project started on this weekend 🙂
this is great! thanks for sharing, im inspired to try it myself!
I found this blog through Pinterest and I LOVE this idea!! I don’t have an Ikea store near me so I will put something together until I can make a trip or I think I can order from their catalog/online. I have gone through MANY different ideas too! Most seem good at first but then don’t work out as I had planned. I like your idea of seeing everything but still keeping the top clutter free! 🙂
Where can I order this? And how much?
Hi Theresa. The shelf, legs, mirror, and stool are from Ikea and the acrylic bead storage trays are from Walmart. All the product info is listed in the post. When I made it, the shelf was around $40-50 and each leg was $5. However, it’s been over a year so the prices may have changed.
Just bought everything today! Can’t wait to assemble everything. For me, the shelf was $39.99 and each leg was $3.50. However, I chose a different chair (one with a back). The only thing I need to get now is a mirror, which it looks like the same one that is pictured above is still available.
This shelf is no longer sold online and l am nowhere near one of their stores. I know the length and width, but would you tell me the height also? I guess I need the distance from the bottom of the glass top to the top of the lower shelf, so that I can try and make something like this. Very cute idea! Thanks for your post!
Hi Deborah! The space between the bottom of the glass top and the top of the shelf is 1 7/8 inches. I think it’ll be great when you make your own shelf because you’ll be able to customize the dimensions to fit your room perfectly. I’d love to see pictures when you’re done. =) Good luck!
Wondering where you got the glass top from. I don’t see it listed in the post – or in any of the comments. Sorry if I missed it – just wondering where to get it.
thanks!
Hi Sk. The glass is part of the actual shelf so it all came together. It’s the Ekby Gruvan shelf from Ikea.
Went to IKEA yesterday and got all the parts… I am making mine right now!! So excited, thanks for posting this great idea!!
Does the Glass top come off? I was thinking of painting it because its only available in black now.
Hi Maddie. Yes, the glass top just sits on the shelf so you’ll be able to take it off easily in order to paint it.
I just put mine together! I love it! Thanks so much for the awesome idea!! I just wanted to update it, in case someone could make use out of it like I did…. I added the Ekby Alex drawer to go under the Ekby Gruvan glass shelf for even more storage. It’s the same measurements as the glass shelf & it’s a perfect addition to this amazing DIY vanity. Here’s the link for the Ekby Alex shelf. Thanks to mstapioca for this invention! 🙂 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20192828/
What a great idea Devon! Since it’ll be double the weight, you’ll definitely want to make sure the legs are closed together for more support…or even add a 5th leg in the back middle for safety. Enjoy your vanity! =)
I say some people use the brakets insted of the legs? do you recommencd one over the other? I would just fear the the vanity wount tilt over if its too heavy and break, so im contemplating on getting the brakets. What is your opinion?
How did you stack them up without the 2 shelves tiltingover or being unsafe? Did they have the Ekby Alex in black?
They didn’t have the Ekby Alex in black, but since the glass shelf is black and drawer shelf is white I just re-upholstered my bench with black & white zebra fabric & covered with fabric plastic to protect it from makeup stains. As far as it tipping over, it doesn’t. I have it pushed up against the wall along the back & the left side of vanity is against another part of a wall. So it’s in a corner of my bedroom. I was going to line a gripper type of material u would use for under carpets so it sticks between the 2 shelves, but I didn’t need to. It’s sturdy the way I have it, but maybe u could use that. Hope that helps. 🙂
This is a bit late but maybe you will reply…how did you attach the two shelves? Did you nail them to each other and then attach the legs under the Ekby Alex shelf?
Hira, it’s just one shelf, which is the Ekby Gruvan shelf, not the Ekby Alex. So it comes all together and I just attached the legs with screws. Make sure you use shorter screws and NOT the ones that come with the legs.
YEA! I assembled mine today! Used some (Ikea) Expedit shelves to set the glass shelf on top of and put baskets in them so now I have more storage. Got the acrylic 9″ containers from the Container Store for about $7 each. So excited to try it out!
Hello, I don’t live by an IKEA store but on Sunday my husband and I are driving to an IKEA store to purchase the supplies. And I’m wondering if you would recommend doing the brackets instead of the legs for the wobbly purpose. My vanity is going to sit on carpet and I’m just afraid of it tilting over not being secure enough and breaking. Would you suggest the brackets or the legs?
I saw this yesterday and I went to IKEA today and bought it I’ve been looking for a small and affordable vanity that would fit in my bedroom and I love love this! Thank you for the idea!! 🙂
Thank you for the practical solution I was looking for! Great idea thanks for sharing! I see a trip to Ike’s this weekend!
added it on pintrest, and made it a reality. love it and have got a lot of compliments on it already! These are the items I used though:
Chair/stool: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59850386/
Mirror: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/assembly_instructions/kolja-mirror-55-cm-round__AA-289167-4_pub.PDF
Shelf: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30193304/
Shelf holders (instead of legs): http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50168704/
Has such a sleek look and i love it!! Thanks for the inspiration.
I’m so glad you’re enjoying your new vanity! It makes getting ready in the morning a little more fun. =)
This is EXACTLY what I need to finish off my bedroom! Thankyou 🙂
This is so fantastic. I don’t have room for this now, but I want to do this later.
I finally built my vanity and I am still so in love with it! I was able to locate the trays to place my make up in ( the acrylic bead containers) at Michael’s. Michael’s also run weekly ads for 40% to 50%. So I only ended up spending about $4-$5 per container.
Imitation is the best form of flattery!!! Thank you so, so, so much! Genius!!!!
Ahhh thank you, Abby! =) I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!
THANK YOU!!! I’m making a list and giving it to my husband. Perfect Christmas present :-).
Brilliant! thanks for sharing
Hey, how big is your trays?
Hi Kukii. The trays I have are 6 3/8″ x 9 3/8″ and 7/8″ tall. The gap between the shelf and glass is about 1 7/8″ so you’ll want a tray that’s a little lower than that.
I’m trying to order the shelf piece online but its saying its not available. Would a store possibly have it in inventory there to purchase? Thank!! I love this idea
Hi Brittany. Yes, unfortunately you can only purchase the shelf at the actual store. Go to the product page and choose the nearest store under “Buy at your local store.” Then click on “Click here to view stock prognosis.” You’ll then see approximately how many are at that particular store. One time it showed my store had 3 in stock but they were not on the shelves. I asked one of the workers in the warehouse and they were able to find them in the back…so make sure you ask even if you don’t see it on the shelf. =) Good luck!!
Brillant. Totally set this up in my walk in closet and I love it. Such a relief after years of bad setups !!
Is there another store you could buy this from?
Hello Morgan. Unfortunately, I have not seen a similiar shelf at another store.
Love your idea 🙂 On Ikea’s website the shelf only comes in black. Do you (or does anyone else) happen to know if it comes in white @ the actual store? thanks!
Thank you, Leanne! Awhile back, my local Ikea store told me that the white has been discontinued so only black is available. Every time I go, I check and I never see white ones. I’m hoping they bring it back thought. =(
thanks so much for your reply! maybe i will paint it, i’ve seen a few tutorials on how to paint laminate ikea furniture.
you can get the black one sand it down with glass paper (yes you can sand laminate) and then spray paint with a glossy white paint. Will need about 4 coats as you are covering black with white – then assemble!
How long did it take u to create “diy ikea makeup vanity | msTapioca”?
It includes a great deal of good information and facts.
Thx -Alison
Hi Alison. It only took about 30 minutes to assemble the makeup vanity and about another hour to organize all my makeup. =)
+ Dioder led lightning into to shelf, if U want.. 🙂
Hi
I loooooove the vanity
Plz
Can u tell me where to buy it
Just give me the shops name
Becauce wht i understand that u have the table from ikea and the drowers from walmart
Thnx dear
Salaaaam
Hi! Yes, you’re correct. The glass shelf and legs are from Ikea and you can purchase the acrylic trays at Walmart, Michaels Arts and Crafts, or online at http://www.createforless.com/Darice+Jewelry+Designer+Bead+Storage+System+with+24+Containers/pid123967.aspx
Thanks for sharing! I actually made it and love it! I used the smaller shelf since space was limited but its perfect for me!
Oh My Word!!! What a fantastic thing to find! You’re wonderful 🙂 Thank you so much!
Finally made one ! I went to Walmart and michaels but they didn’t have the clear trays so I went to Joan fabrics and found them there! 🙂
Thanks, Andrea! I’ve updated the blog to include Joann’s. =) I hope you love your vanity just as much as I do!
i can not find the trays anywhere!!! 😦 please send some links to the site to get them 🙂
Hi Marissa.
You can also find the trays at Joann Fabric and Craft stores. They’re on sale too! =)

Thank you so much for sharing this, I bought the parts and put it together and it looks great. Now I need to go get the acrylic trays.
Such a WONDERFUL idea! The nearest Ikea to me in Alabama is Atlanta so I trucked it over there last night. Put it together the second I walked through the door. Thanks so much!!
I’m so sad! I went to order these products and Ikea wants to charge me $299 for shipping 😦 !!!
Alyssa, that’s horrible! I’m sorry it cost so much to ship!
Yeah, its crazy! And I was so excited when I saw your idea. Its such a cool cheap way to make a makeup vanity! Guess I have to make a road trip to Ikea!
Unfortunately I tried to order this at IKEA and the shipping was $299.00 😦 so IDK what to do now 😦
I got all the materials you had on the site however I got the shelf that was 31″ since I have a small bedroom. Do you think this will still work?
Hi Sarah. The 31″ is only 7.5″ deep as opposed to 11″ deep. Therefore, it might not be deep/big enough to actually sit at and put your legs under. It would also be too small to attach 4 legs.
Hi, I really love your vanity unit idea, it’s so creative and just perfect for seeing everything you have! I’m going to make my own as well 🙂 I just have one question. I’m in the UK and the plastic storage boxes you’re using aren’t easy to come by here, and the ones that are available aren’t cheap
I’ve seen that ikea are selling plastic trays in the godmorgon range but I’m not sure if they’ll fit into the space. They are a 3cm depth but I’m not sure how deep the gap is. Would you mind letting me know so I can plan ahead and figure out what to do? Would really appreciate it! The trays are a bit longer but I’ve figured that this may be down to some tabs on either side which I could cut off. Thanks very much for any advice you can give and for sharing such a cool idea 🙂
Hi Michelle. The gap between the shelf and glass is about 1 3/4 inches so the godmorgon trays would be able to slide between them. And yes, you would have to cut off those handles. =) I hope you enjoy your vanity as much as I do!
Thanks so much for your fast reply! I’m so excited that I can hopefully use the godmorgon trays :)) I’ll post up here again if I can adjust the handles easily etc so that others know they can use them as an alternative maybe. Thanks again 🙂
thank you so much, i love it. i was looking for a vanity and i came across this page. might copy it. lol
Do you suggest any specific sized screws?
Hi Sonje. I just looked and a 1/2″ would be too short and you want to make sure the legs are secure. So I would suggest longer than 1/2″ but no more than 3/4″. Sorry I don’t remember the size I used. Definitely measure the screw before you decide on a final one.
Hello! I so love your vanity, so gorgoeus! By the way, is the divider mirror on the tables also can buy on Ikea?
Hi. Are you referring to the plastic trays? If so, they are called Darice Jewelry Designer Bead Storage System with 24 Containers. You can find them in the jewelry/bead section at Michaels, http://www.createforless.com, or Joann Fabric and Craft stores.
This is the first time i came in. I really love your idea. Want to make one now…
Thank you to share your idea. Many topic in your blog so cutes. I’m fall in love now.
kiki from thailand
Thank you Kiki! =) You’re so sweet.
I use the top of the trays as another tray. They have edges and work better than the bottoms for me as it is easier to remove things.
That’s a great idea. You get two trays for the price of one. =)
Hi! I just thought, and I may not be the first to mention this, but you could always do a bracket in the middle underneath the table (or two spread evenly along the table) and attach the table right to the wall! If you are sure about the placement of it, then that would secure it from falling forward and from the weight becoming too much for the construction. The table looks awesome and so clean-lined, so I thought that would help. 🙂
I just found your diy vanity.Iloooooove it!!!! I dont have as much make up but it makes me want to buy more!!! 🙂 if you come up with a diy nail polish storage container i would love to see it!!! Thanks for sharing!!!! 🙂
I don’t know where to find the acrylic trays. I do not have a Joann’s near by, and I can’t find them on the Michael’s website. I would like to purchase them at the store and not online.. I read some people purchased them at the container store, if anyone could be nice enough to post the direct link to them. Thank you 😀
Is it hard to get your makeup out of the desk? Like it looks like it would be hard to reach all the way in the back to get the product you would need and push the makeup in the fron out of the way to get to the one you need.

Hi Molly. No, it’s not hard at all. The makeup sits in clear plastic trays and I pull the trays in and out like little drawers.
Genius!
I am in LOVE! Beautiful vanity! Can you please do an update of how its holding up and how long have you had it for? Have you ever moved it? How is it holding up? I am headed to Ikea tomorrow to build one for myself!
Hi Mary. It’s been more than 2 years and I still LOVE it. 🙂 Yes, I can definitely do an update soon with some more pictures of how I store all the makeup. Thanks for the post idea and I hope you love your new vanity as much as I do!
Hi Mary. I’ve posted an updated blog about the makeup vanity. Thanks for the idea!
Thank you so much! 🙂
You are one slick chick!!!! Love it!!!!
I love it!!! i might just copy you! aha!!!
Did you need two of the EKBY GRUVAN tables? or just one attached to 4 legs?
Hi Cindia. You just need 1 Ekby Gruvan shelf (the larger 47″ one) and 4 legs.
Reblogged this on Heathers Treasure and commented:
I am in love with this vanity!
She does a great tutorial on how she made hers! I’m definitely inspired!
🙂
Wow, that’s quite a display. I have like one of each product, so I just keep it all in my travel make up bag. Looks great though!
Hi! There is no ikea store where I live 😦 Do you know of any places where I can get a similar shelf? I’m desperate!! Thanks!
Kylee, unfortunately I haven’t seen a similar shelf like this one. However, Ikea does ship the shelf but shipping might be expensive. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. If I ever see something similar, I’ll definitely make a post. 🙂
Hi! There is no Ikea store where I live sadly! 😦 Any suggestions of places for the shelf/
where is the wooden organizer from?
Aly, I got the wooden organizer from Ikea years ago, but they no longer carry it. 😦
I love love this but how did you do the upper part where you put the glass on top and allowed for the space for the make up. you didnt really mention that part i think, or I didnt understand. 😦
Jeannette, the glass is part of the Ekby Gruvan shelf from Ikea. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30193304/#/70193302
I want this, so easy…gotta pin it too…found it on youtube too.
I’ve been dying to make this vanity! Only problem is, the bigger shelf size is not sold in ANY ikeas near me and is not available online 😦 What do you think of using the smaller shelf?
Hi Stacy. The smaller shelf would not work for the vanity because it’s only 7.5 inches deep and you wouldn’t be able to attach legs to it. 😦 Sorry.
i loved it! i’ve been searching for agrat idea to storage all my makeup and this was perfect.. Thank you!
OMG, this is so awesome, and it works perfectly with Beauty Butler trays! The best part is when you gotta get ready on the go you can take the trays with you. Thanks for sharing this. http://www.getbeautybutler.com
Love this idea!! I am so going to make one for myself and my two tween girls! Thanks for sharing!! I would LOVE to somehow make a small jewelry armoire with these shelves for costume jewelry. I think when my costume accessories are not open to air, they last longer. I have been looking everywhere for over a year for a see-through-acrylic jewelry organizer that is a closed system and haven’t found one yet. I would need 3-4 of these shelves and somehow attach them so they slide out, move, etc. I will think of something. Thank you for these instructions!!
Thank you Sam! I hope you and your girls love it as much as I do. =)
I Love This Idea!!! but as I’m searching around for the items used i cant seem to find them in stock anywhere. Is there any other way someone can suggest i go about making this.
would it be possible to use this shelf instead? i like the white better than the black!
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20192828/
Hi Jenn. Yes, that shelf would definitely work. Make sure to follow the same directions with attaching the legs because the screws that come with the legs are too long.
I am trying to find the shelf but I cant find it! is it still in stock to buy at ikea? If so do you have the direct URL to the shelf? Thanks!
Hi Weslie. Unfortunately, I don’t see the shelf on the Ikea website anymore so it probably has been discontinued. =( A couple of people have found it on Craigslist.
Where did you get the glass on top from!? Would they still carry it? What shelf would you suggest now that it’s a few years later…? 🙂
Hi Tiffany. The glass top was part of the Ikea shelf, but I don’t see the shelf on the Ikea website anymore so it’s most likely discontinued. =( A couple of people found the shelf on Craigslist. Another reader used the LIATORP Sofa Table, which is more expensive. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10278101/#/00105064
Like some of you, I’ve tried many, many, MANY makeup storage … wimirror.wordpress.com
I do think the shelf has been discontinued. 😦 Any ideas of something similar to this?
Hi Brooke. Unfortunately, I think the shelf is discontinued and I haven’t seen anything similar in other stores. =( A couple of people have found it on Craigslist.
